A three AM phone call about a locked room changed everything

to a whisper. “He called twice this morning to ask if I wanted him to drive up and help me load my car.”

“You have to tell him eventually,” I said.

“Not until the lease is fully processed,” she said, her fingers tightening on the edge of the paper. “I signed the papers for the apartment on Maple Street this morning.”
