Three cardboard boxes in a hallway closet changed everything after forty years

She did not ask why I had the suitcase. She simply stepped aside, her floral apron smelling of the cinnamon toast she had made for breakfast.

We cleared the circular oak table in her living room, pushing aside her glass candy dish and a stack of local newspapers. The room was quiet, save for the distant hum of her old refrigerator in the kitchen.
